A temporary unemployment aid introduced in Hong Kong for the first time will be open for applications for three weeks starting next Wednesday, offering a one-time sum of HK$10,000 to people who have lost their jobs.
Adults who were employed full-time and part-time, as well as the self-employed, will be eligible for the subsidy.

Applicants must be inactive or unemployed for 30 consecutive days before applying. Their monthly salary before they become unemployed must be between 2,700 and 30,000 HK$.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Doris Ho Pui-ling, head of the Office of Innovation and Policy Coordination, said those who worked as casual workers for a day or two while they were unemployed will enjoy discretionary power when receiving their application. .
She said the government aims to disburse the grant three to four weeks after applications are received.
Applicants can choose to receive the HK$10,000 grant through the same bank account they previously used under the cashback program, or can submit supporting documents to opt for a different account.
She said most apps will be verified against their MPF account information. Candidates can also submit a self-declaration if they do not have an MPF account.
Ho said those who made false statements could face criminal charges and have their grants revoked.
