The Abuja City Council (AMAC)warned residents against cash payments to council revenue collectors.
M Christophe MaikalanguPresident, AMACgave the warning while briefing journalists on the new regional council tax regime on Wednesday in Abuja.
Maikalangu said the new policy, which exempted the transport sector, was aimed at blocking financial leakages, cleaning up the system and improving revenue generation.
He added that the development was also part of the administrations commitment to curb multiple taxation, solicitation, extortion and misappropriation of council revenue.
According to him, the board was reluctant to disband the technical partners because governance is an ongoing process.
“Further revelations of criminal diversion of revenue to private accounts, bragging and bogus staff on the ground have, however, forced us to heed the widespread public outcry.
“Given these and many other developments, I would like to reiterate that the cancellation of all forms of MoUs entered into by previous regimes is in effect.
“All forms of collection, except those in the transport sector, must stop immediately.
“In this regard, we have now stopped all forms of cash payments.
“Prospective customers are advised to visit the office of the Chief Revenue Officer of the Council Secretariat, to obtain payment tellers and new account numbers, and make payment at designated banks,” said the helmsman of the AMAC.
Maikalangu further warned that any technical partner found guilty of breaking the new law would be prosecuted.
“The new policy must be adhered to and statutory staff must adhere strictly to it with regard to revenue generation.
“The paying public is hereby enjoined to guard against criminals who, in an attempt to deceive the government, collect peanuts with false receipts,” he said.
The President added that the administration was there to ensure that available resources were strictly spent for the purpose for which they were intended.
He also called on residents to report any suspected cases of embezzlement and extortion, as well as any irregularities to the council, via his call center number 09162410000 or the security staff nearest to them.
